Social Skills Training for All Ages

OUR MISSION

Our goal is to teach social thinking and social behaviors to individuals who want to improve their interactions with others.  Improved social behavior increases one’s chance of success, opens the door to more opportunities, and results in a more meaningful, satisfying life.

We believe these behaviors can best be affected by working, not only with the individual, but also with their families, educators, and employers.  Education promotes awareness which leads to better understanding and support for these individuals, helping them become more integrated into their families, more successful in their peer relationships, and more productive in their jobs.

SOCIAL THINKING GROUPS

Behavior Plus -Texas provides training to help group members understand the need to demonstrate expected, appropriate behavior in various social situations; to learn how to determine what is expected and appropriate in these situations; and to learn how to execute those behaviors in as natural a manner as possible.

Potential group members include persons who have social difficulties due to a limited ability to understand what is expected in various situations; difficulty understanding others’ perspectives and social nuances; knowing how to join a group; knowing how to engage in a conversation with others on a variety of subjects; listening as others talk about their favorite subjects; identifying and appropriately responding to others’ feelings, wants, and needs; and understanding that other people are forming an opinion of them based on how they look, act, and talk.  These persons may have difficulty keeping friends and may have difficulty at school or work due to their inability to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.

Groups are available for children, teens, young adults, and mature adults.  Groups are formed based on age/grade, needs, and personalities.  Additional groups are formed as soon as similar applicants are identified.

 WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS/CAREGIVERS

Learning new behaviors and using them often enough to form habits requires support from the family.  Children progress much faster when significant adults take an active role in supporting behavioral change.

Raising a child with social behavior deficits is challenging and requires understanding and above all, patience.  Our practical workshops and parent training sessions are essential to provide the knowledge needed to gain a better understanding of your child and increase your skills in managing behavioral challenges.  In addition, you will have the opportunity to network with other parents struggling with similar issues who will become valuable resources for you as you continue your journey with your child.

WORKSHOPS FOR EDUCATORS

Behavior Plus -Texas also provides workshops for public and private school educators and day care providers.  These workshops can be tailored to the needs of each individual campus or developed to meet the generic needs of the district.  Popular workshops include information on working with students with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder; behavior principles; strategies for working with students with  challenging behavior; and classroom management.

 BEHAVIORAL CONSULTATIONS

Behavior Plus -Texas provides private behavioral consultations for families who need specific strategies tailored to the needs of their children and their families.  The goal of the consultations is to teach the caregivers how to more effectively manage their children’s behavior at home, in the community, and at school.

Behavior Plus -Texas also provides behavioral consultation for the staff of your child’s school to inform the staff of the strategies being used with your child at home or in group.  It is important to foster a cooperative relationship between home, school, and the professionals at Behavior Plus -Texas to better meet your child’s needs.  This provides consistency across settings for your child which greatly increases the acquisition rate of new skills.

 PARENT/CAREGIVER TRAINING

Behavior Plus –Texas firmly believes individuals can learn the why, when, where, and how of social behavior, but they will need help and support from the significant adults in their lives.  Learning new behaviors and using them often enough for them to become habit requires patience and support from the family.  Your child will make progress much faster when significant adults take an active role in their learning.

Raising a child with social behavior deficits is challenging and requires understanding, patience, patience, and more patience.  Our workshops are designed to provide the knowledge you need to help you gain a better understanding of your child; this in turn, will foster more patience.  In addition, you will meet other parents struggling with similar issues who will be a valuable resource for you as you continue your journey with your child.

Testimonials

The Nurtured Heart ApproachTM

“I took Nancy’s class out of desperation. Our two children were bickering all the time.  Our younger child was suffering from low self-esteem and was mad at the world.  Surviving the homework hassles and arguments was taking a toll on both of us.  We didn’t even take the class together because we were afraid to leave both kids together with a sitter.

As soon as we started using the techniques covered in the first classes, we saw an improvement in our youngest child’s attitude. We have been using the complete system now for about 3 months.  Both our children’s behavior has improved.  Our youngest child’s self-esteem is much better now, and his attitude towards both school and family is great.  Our older child has started completing his chores without complaint.

The classes make you more aware of what your child is doing right.  We have become more consistent as parents and are better at preventing bad behavior.  The system does take some time to do each day (especially at first).  We had to talk about a lot of issues to make sure we were on the same page.  The initial time investment was well worth the results.  After 2 months, using the system got easier on everyone in the house – the kids accepted it and we got faster completing the point sheets."
